Will computer case fans cut the mustard? Can Steve belt grind a knife 4eva with his DIY heat sink cooling system? The idea is to do a fixed amount of grinding work in a similar amount of time and measure the temperature difference of the platen without a cooling system and with a DIY cooling system. I tried measuring the temperature of the steel I was grinding but the laser thermometer gave readings from 125 F to 325 F in the same spot only seconds apart. I think it was fooled by forming oxides on the hot face of the steel square bar which change colors and may have messed up the laser readings? The fact that oxides formed means the steel was actually over 400-500 degrees in some cases and the thermometer never read that hot. So I didn't report these particular readings. I think someone with some machining and fabrication skill could put together something highly effective by dovetailing an aluminum heat sink into the back of a platen, for example.
